Mike Reflects
One of my favorite things about C2E2 is their willingness to list in-booth signing guests (like Alyson) on their official guest list.
A lot of other shows will limit the guest list to just those being brought in or sponsored by the convention, leaving anyone else to announce or publicize their appearances via their own marketing or social media.
While that will work out for some people, most fans (myself included) generally turn to the guest list to see who the guests will be.
Just last year, I was at a convention where I went around a corner and found some celebrity guests that were completely unadvertised by the convention. I even heard through the grapevine that there were others, but I never found them.
I talked to the guy who was running the booth I just happened upon, and, for him, it was just kind of an unavoidable fact that most people at that convention won’t know he’s hosting signings until they get there and see it.
That show let him have a booth, they even let him have a panel, but they wouldn’t put his guests on their guest list.
C2E2, on the other hand, has been welcoming to (and willing to advertise) sponsored or in-booth signings since their first show in 2010.
To me, that just makes sense. It allows the show to capitalize on guests in the vendor/exhibitor area without requiring the usual work of coordinating their appearances.
It also provides an incentive for exhibitors to host signings, knowing they’ll get advertising from the show, thus allowing for a more diverse lineup and a better show for the fans.
Case-in-point? Alyson Court (obviously).
Like a lot of people my age, I grew up with The Big Comfy Couch.
I was secretly disappointed that she wasn’t part of the X-Men group who appeared last year, but I’m certainly glad she’ll be there this year.
I’m even more glad it’s at a show that’s willing to do us all the courtesy of telling us in advance that she’ll be there so we can plan accordingly.
That’s apparently a rarity.
