Mike Reflects
Like I had mentioned in my reflection for my interview with Alexandra Nader, a lot of my friends and colleagues have become parents or grandparents or aunts and uncles over the last few years.
I’m always quick to recommend the Marriott’s TYA shows, especially if they have an interest in theatre.
I was interested in speaking with Allison specifically because she exemplifies the first point I bring up when I’m recommending these productions at the Marriott: you get the same caliber of performance, from the same performers, you see in the evening mainstage productions.
The shows themselves are geared towards kids in length and style, but the overall production is a great introduction and stepping stone to what Chicago regional theatre has to offer for when they’re older.
Additionally, as I mentioned in the interview, every performance is followed by a Q&A/talkback session so the kids can connect on a deeper level with the show they just saw, the performers in it, and the concept of theatre itself.
As a matter of fact, I remember, as a young child, going to see a show that had a Q&A session like that.
I don’t remember what the show was. I don’t remember where it was—it may have been the Marriott. I don’t even remember if I went with my parents, friends, or class.
But I vividly remember getting to ask a question of a man on stage dressed as a turtle.
(If you’re wondering, my question was where I could get a CD to bring the music of the show home, and he was not equipped to answer it.)
It’s been over 20 years. I can’t tell you anything about the show (except that I apparently really liked the music), but I doubt I’ll ever forget that part of the experience.
I love that the Marriott is giving kids today that same memory.
