My favorite part of the interview is, unfortunately, not something I can take credit for.
As you can hear when Keith is telling me about his favorite projects, he's approached by fans who greet him and tell him that they watch him in Pakistan.
This isn't the first time I've been talking to someone when they're approached by a fan. (At one of my first conventions, Val Kilmer wanted to do the interview while still meeting his line, which was a bit of a challenge for everyone.)
And it's always something I enjoy seeing (or, in this case, hearing).
It's one thing to ask them to tell me about those times, but it's a whole other thing to get to experience it with them.
Especially in this case.
I can't, nor would I deign to, speak for Keith, but, for me, I often don't realize just how far reaching and universal some of the entertainment I enjoy is. Naturally, the same goes for the reach of the people in those projects.
It's easy for me to know Keith David is extremely famous, for example. I've seen him in a bunch of things—my favorites, as I mentioned, being Enlisted on FOX and Community (yes, I did watch and greatly enjoy the later seasons of Community). I even distinctly remember him from the Agent Cody Banks movies, and I haven't seen those since I was little.
It's also easy for me to know Keith David is beloved as a performer, by myself and others. The Flashback Weekend Facebook group is abuzz with fans excited for the chance to meet him. And as soon as I told a friend that I'd interviewed him tonight, she immediately responded with astonishment, telling me how she'd loved him from Gargoyles since way back when.
But, despite very easily knowing both, it's not until I hear someone excitedly tell Keith that they'd watch him all the way over in Pakistan that I really get a sense of understanding of the breadth of that reach and fame.
I'm still not even sure I have anything more than a mere sense of it.
Like I said, I can't, won't, and wouldn't even think of speaking for Keith. For all I know, this could be something he hears once a week.
But, for me, I'm still in awe over it.
